What does prolactin do in your body?

Prolactin is best known for its role in breastfeeding, but it affects much more than that. Elevated prolactin levels can disrupt ovulation and lead to irregular or absent periods - even if you're not breastfeeding. Many don't realize that prolactin can be a hidden cause behind menstrual irregularities.

What's included in Maybe Baby's hormone test?

Our test measures prolactin along with up to 11 other hormones for a complete picture of your hormonal health.

Apart from a slightly scary prick, the whole Maybe Baby experience was positive! The results were clear and easy to understand. The wait felt a bit long for me due to weekends and holidays, so it was also appreciated when you informed me about the delay.

Jessica

Good instructions on how to perform the test, nice to have both a summary and more detailed information about the different parts of the results.

Molly

Prolactin Prolactin

Think of prolactin as the milk hormone - but it does much more than prepare for breastfeeding. It can also affect your ovulation and menstrual cycle.

What does it do?

Prolactin is produced in the pituitary gland and is best known for stimulating milk production after childbirth. But prolactin also plays a role in regulating the menstrual cycle. If prolactin levels are too high, it can suppress GnRH, which in turn reduces LH and FSH and can stop ovulation.

Why does it matter?

Testing prolactin can provide important clarity if you have irregular periods or absent ovulation. Elevated prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) is a treatable cause of menstrual disorders and fertility impact.

Reference range: Normal prolactin in non-pregnant women: 2-29 ng/mL. Values above 25-30 ng/mL may need further investigation.
